The journalist who
covered a massacre and came home and didn’t speak for three days. The entrepreneur who lost
his business and lost his identity in the same moment, and didn’t know which grief to mourn
first. These are not edge cases. In Kenya, in Africa, across the world — this is the
invisible epidemic running underneath the economy.

The people we trust to hold everything together — doctors, first responders, teachers,
aid workers — are themselves carrying weight that no one ever agreed to help them lift.

The Turning Point

When “help people” became something specific

We always knew the goal was to help people. But that phrase is too wide. It contains everything
and commits to nothing. It takes sitting with our own burnout — the particular exhaustion
of creatives and professionals who pour everything into their work and forget to ask whether
the work is pouring anything back — to understand what kind of help we actually need to give.

The work that matters is with high-risk professionals. With people whose job descriptions include
absorbing other people’s pain as a professional requirement. Healthcare workers processing
repeated patient deaths. Journalists whose desks are lined with the worst things humanity
does. Police officers who walk into scenes they can never un-see. NGO and humanitarian staff
stationed at the edges of crises, held together by policy manuals that say nothing about
what to do when you start dreaming about the camp.

In Kenya specifically, workplace trauma support is almost entirely absent
from corporate and institutional culture. There is no structured debriefing at KNH after
a difficult shift. Media houses don’t have resident trauma counselors. The GSU officer
deployed to a conflict zone comes home and is expected to simply resume. The gap is enormous —
and almost no one is filling it.

The Framework

Why occupational psychology — and why trauma therapy

Occupational psychology sits at the intersection of the workplace and the human being
inside it. It asks: how does work shape us? And what happens when that shaping breaks
something? Trauma-informed occupational psychology takes it further — it says that for
certain professionals, the very nature of their role creates cumulative psychological injury,
and that injury needs a name, a framework, and a practitioner trained to address it.

This is not about weakness. It is about load-bearing. A bridge engineer doesn’t call the
bridge weak when it needs reinforcement after years of bearing weight — they call it a
structural reality. We need practitioners who understand the structural realities of
what high-risk professional work does to the people inside it.

Compassion fatigue. Secondary traumatic stress. Moral injury. Burnout with clinical
roots. These are not HR buzzwords. They are diagnosable, treatable conditions — and when
caught early, preventable. The modalities leading this field globally are
EMDR therapy and somatic therapy — both experiencing
significant growth in clinical adoption and public awareness. That surge is not coincidence.
It is the world catching up to what trauma actually requires.

The Modalities

What trauma therapy actually looks like

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured,
evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people process distressing memories through
bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements. It reduces the emotional charge
attached to traumatic recall without requiring the person to narrate their experience
in full detail. For high-risk professionals carrying years of accumulated exposure, EMDR
offers a pathway that respects both the depth of the wound and the professional’s need
      for functional recovery.

Somatic therapy recognises that trauma is not only stored in the mind —
it lives in the nervous system, the muscles, the breath. A first responder who tenses
every time they hear a particular sound; a nurse whose shoulders haven’t dropped in
months; a journalist whose body has learned to brace before opening their inbox.
Somatic therapy works with the body’s stored responses directly, using breathwork,
grounding techniques, and body-awareness practices to release what the mind alone
      cannot reach.

Global search data shows EMDR searches rising 40% year-on-year.
Somatic therapy up 40%. Trauma bonding awareness up 50%.
People are asking the right questions. East Africa needs practitioners trained to answer them.

The Path

How we’re building toward this — including the degree making it possible

This journey is anchored in an MSc in Business Psychology through the University of East London,
delivered via UNICAF — chosen deliberately. Business Psychology sits
at exactly the crossroads we need: human behavior, organizational dynamics, psychological
theory applied to real-world professional contexts.
