The Flood Was an Audit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nairobi’s March 2026 floods were not purely a rainfall event. Blocked drainage channels, carrying years of uncollected waste \u2014 paper, cardboard, packaging, the things that had buyers if anyone had connected them \u2014 turned road after road into fast-moving rivers across Mukuru, Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, and Westlands. <\/em>The water found the gaps we left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paper and cardboard are the silent contributors that rarely get named. Plastic takes all the blame \u2014 and plastic is a problem \u2014 but paper absorbs water, swells, and mats together in drainage channels with the structural integrity of a dam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The March floods carried visible paper cargo down the Nairobi River: cardboard from market stalls, newspaper wadding, printing offcuts from River Road print shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of it had a buyer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric Omondi walked the flood hotspots himself this week. His conclusion was the same one water engineers have been saying for years: drainage and garbage.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 His response \u2014 mobilising Nairobians under the #FagiaNairobi<\/strong> banner at Uhuru Park, Saturday 8 a.m. \u2014 is the Sisi Kwa Sisi spirit converting itself into action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Show up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clean the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not wait for anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are fully behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we want to ask the harder question: when the cleanup ends on Saturday afternoon and volunteers go home tired and proud, where does the paper go?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Into another skip? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Down another drain when the next rain comes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
